A Tough Week

Guys,

I am a frog. I neglected to tap Jay Tayloe and Paul McClure for their guest blogging duties. Last week was a blur with all the press that the CSG's have been getting and I failed to keep the mojo going. As a result, the Gentrifiers suffered back to back overtime losses this last week. I am only able to relate what Battle Williford has told me over the phone, but from what I can gather, the last loss (happening last night, 7/30) was especially tough to take.

Right now, we are 3-4 and tottering on the edge of mediocrity. It would be rash, but perhaps not unfair, to compare us to the 1999-2000 Tennessee Volunteers basketball team. We are full of talent, but we have trouble finishing. If we are like the Vols, then Jay Tayloe is definitely Tony Harris and Paul McClure is Ron Slay.

Our last regular season game is this Monday, August 4th at 7:15 PM. We are playing a team that we beat the pants off of last time (Fighting Chandiru) and we need to show up big time to pull out a win. Our wins are directly related to the # of adults above 30 years of age that are playing any one night, so we need you there. I will be posting more as the game draws near. See you there.

Rage Against the Machine

Simply put,  the Green Machine was handled tonight. No one need wonder anymore if the Gentrifiers are a force to be reckoned with. Steed Carson answered that tonight with his 4 threes in a row after the Machine decide to go "man" on us. As it stands, The Green Machine are the Champs and we are the new kids on the block. But, for tonight and until we meet them in the tourney, we served them up a pretty good whoopin'.

Gentrys:

Steed Carson: For looking so good I wanted to put him on a plate and sop him up with a biscuit.

Richard Rogers: For his quote of the night, "Don't do that!"

Jay Tayloe: For the best shooting form in the history of C league.

Kevin McHale: For being there for us when it counted.

What you need to remember is this. The Cleveland Street Gentrifiers are real, we are 3-2 and we will only get better. Word has it that we are getting a new player, which should be exciting.

Hopefully, that will make up for those who decide not to show (Scroll down).

La Maquina Verde

Gentrifiers and frequent blog readers,

Tomorrow night is crucial in the inaugural season of the Gentrifiers. We play the Green Machine in what is shaping up to be an epic battle. We are 2-2 right now. Since our opening night loss, we have played three solid games and we have gained respect in the C league. With that being said, I have fielded many requests for inside info on what is going on what the Gentrifiers. With those requests in mind, I thought I would give our adoring fan base a little peek in what the Gentrifiers are doing as I write this:

Steed Carson: Wants to know what is up with that crazy Danica.

Bubba Halliday: Wants to know why the heck he is getting emails about some basketball team.

Battle Williford: Wishing he could figure out how to channel McHale on the court at Ross M. Lynn.

Next Game: 8:15, Tuesday July 22nd at Ross M. Lynn Arena. Be there.

2-2, but our spirits are up.

This last loss was a tough one to take. We played the Sons of Jorel and I personally think they are the best team we have played so far. Their inside big guy(graduated class of 1991), took it to us during the first half. We had no answer for him. Before we knew it, the score was 27-10 and things were not looking good.

Lo and Behold, Henry Talbot and Steed Carson took matters into their own hands. Not willing to watch the team give up without a fight, both former JV gunners came out firing. We tied up the game at 38 all, but simply were not able to finish the game.

On a more upbeat note, the Sons of Jorel were hard playing and serious, but good guys. If you can say anything about them, its that they are really nice to girls.

Gentrys for not throwing in the towel and scoring 20 pts apiece: Henry Talbot and Steed Carson.

Our next game is next Tuesday, July 22nd at 8:15 PM. We are playing those big nasties the Green Machine and we will need to gear up. We have the distinct advantage of having a large roster and when we show up in force, we are then a force to be reckoned with. With an eye towards having people, I am officially calling out Bubba Halliday and Jeffrey Lancaster to show up for the next game. Fellas, it is the turning point. We have a shot at making the tournament and doing some damage. Belly up to the bar.

He and Steed will force teams to focus on our perimeter which should open up the interior for Richard and Jay. I will see you all there.

They Have Happened Before

It is true. We, the Gentrifiers of Cleveland Street, are on a winning streak. After our 44-35 dismantling of the Fighting Chandiru (Really just some 2006 MUS grads with Independent Pres. jerseys), we have officially won two games in a row and our confidence is rising with our win total.

Now, I want to annouce winners of last nights "Gentrys"(The official Cleveland Street Gentrifier ' nod of approval'"

Gentry for best use of intimidation: Richard Rogers for absolutely psyching out the point guard for the Chandiru who needed to be reminded that this was C league.

Gentry for best early season teammate: Two winners here... Paul McClure and Henry Talbot. We won't be seeing them again on the court as neither of them reside full time in Memphis. Henry and Paul are two of our top four scorers and we will have to replace their firepower somehow (Bubba and John T.)

Postgame reporting done by none other than former East High great Tony Harris apparently lets us know that up to four (4) Gentrifiers last night were seen at the Windjammer enjoying some post game beverages and listening to the melodic stylings of the Southhaven residents on the karaoke machine. Gentry for Best Song goes to the couple that attempted to and succeeded in singing/french kissing during some Alan Jackson song. Perhaps this Windjammer outing could turn into a tradition for the Gents. More on that in the next post. For now, I leave you with a quote:

8:15 Pm. Gentrifiers versus Kandiru. Battle is going to lock down on Webster Cannon and not let him see the light of day. Get ready for the game baby.
